Sangria can be enjoyed by all family members of drinking age, of course. Its mild, citrusy and not cloyingly sweet. Sangria is one of my favorite drinks to make for entertaining guests, perfect for that sunny afternoon on the lawn with aunties and uncles you haven’t seen all year long. It’s easy to make and can be ‘customized’ any way you like. All you need is a good dry wine; red, white or rosé , brandy, fresh fruits and one of your favorite juices. I prefer using orange but cranberry or pineapple would also taste just as nice in this sangria. For best results allow it to sit overnight. It will get sweeter and fruiter as it sets.
This recipe serves about 4-6 people but you can double or triple the portions so everyone can enjoy a couple of glasses.
Ingredients:
- 1 bottle red wine
- 1 cup orange juice
- ½ cup brandy( optional)
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ cup water
- 1 apple, sliced
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 lemon, sliced
- 1 cup strawberries, halved
Preparation:
Add sugar and water to a small saucepan; over medium high heat bring the mixture to a boil. Cook until sugar is fully dissolved. Allow to cool.
Add red wine, brandy, orange juice, apples, oranges, lemon and strawberries to a pitcher. Add in cooled syrup or sweetener and stir. Let it sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
Serve over ice and garnish with sliced orange.
Have an awesome festive season and please enjoy responsibly.
